Effect of Low Intensity Laser Therapy on amount of Orthodontically Induced Root Resorption: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) is a common biological consequence of orthodontic tooth movement. Low-intensity laser therapy (LILT) has been proposed as a non-invasive adjunct due to its anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties.
Objectives: This systematic review evaluated whether LILT reduces the extent of OIIRR during orthodontic treatment
Methods: Electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials published up to August 31, 2024. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed methodological quality using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool. Quantitative synthesis was performed using Review Manager (RevMan) 5.4.
Results: Five randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. Pooled analysis showed slightly lower root resorption values in LILT groups; however, the differences were not statistically significant. Surface-specific analyses also demonstrated no significant differences.
Conclusions: Current evidence indicates that LILT does not significantly reduce orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption.
